Bible Verses for Peace | Peace Beyond Understanding
The LifeLine Tool.
Peace, the kind the Bible talks about, isn't the same thing as quiet. You can have total silence and still be at war inside. And you can be standing in front of the worst news of your life and feel something you can't explain.
Not the peace you're picturing
Mickey draws a distinction early: the peace being discussed isn't a quiet room or a walk in the woods. "That's not true peace... we'll be talking about is not that peace." It's an inner peace — one Mickey admits he still doesn't always have, even after decades of faith. "At 64 years old, I get it right sometimes, and sometimes I don't."
The peace of God which transcends all understanding
"And the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." — Philippians 4:7
Blake points out what the phrase actually admits: peace here doesn't come from explaining your way out of chaos. "Sometimes the chaos of life is just too much for us to have an understanding of an exact course of peace." The peace isn't the reward for having it figured out, it shows up instead of having it figured out.
Jesus had peace and knew what was coming
"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." — John 14:27
Blake gives the verse its context: Jesus says this right before his arrest, after already asking in the garden for the cup to be removed from him. He wasn't peaceful because he didn't know what was coming — he knew exactly what was coming, down to the part where God would turn away from him on the cross. "He knew where the end game was, and he was telling the disciples, he had peace." The example isn't that faith removes hard things. It's that peace and hard things can be true at the same time.
Three feet of floodwater
Mickey's clearest story of peace isn't a calm one, it's the opposite. Around 2009-2010, during the financial crash, he'd already lost his mother, lost money across three businesses, and was down to one shopping center keeping him afloat. Then a record flood put that shopping center three feet underwater. "The whole weight of the world — I just lost my mother, I had lost lots of money, and I don't know that I'm going to make it any longer... I could not see any way out." Standing at the edge of the water with the man who'd worked with him for 14 years, something happened that Mickey still can't fully explain:
"It was like God poured cold water right through my veins, and it was just like a peace that came over me like I've never in my life experienced. And I haven't really experienced it since then."
He didn't understand it in the moment. He wasn't looking for a Bible verse, he just needed a way out. "I did not understand it. All I knew is there was a peace that came over me." The flood, it turned out, ended up being one of the better things that happened to him financially. He couldn't have known that standing in the water. The peace came before the explanation, not after.
Temporary peace vs. the real thing
Mickey is direct about the difference between comfort and peace: ice cream, bow hunting, a boat on the lake — all of it gives a version of peace that runs out the moment the activity ends. "This life is full of temporary things that give us peace. It's just all temporal. But the only true peace comes from a faith in Jesus Christ."
If this is you
If your mind won't turn off — if peace feels like something other people have access to — that's exactly what this is for. Mickey: Welcome back to The Lifeline, and I'm Mickey Mitchell, Blake: And I'm Blake Mitchell, and we're so glad you're joining us here today. Today we're talking about something that we're all chasing every day, peace. Mickey: You know, Blake, whenever you talk about peace, the first thing you think of is being in a quiet spot, being in a closet somewhere, just by yourself or about in the woods. But what we'll be talking about today is not that peace. That's not true peace is what God offers us. We'll be about peace that is an inner peace, and it is a peace that, at 64 years old, I get right sometimes, and sometimes I don't. Blake: As an expecting father, if I have a child around the house, I'm pretty much expecting for peace to be pretty rare around our house, coming here soon. But that peace that is only found in Father God is something that, no matter what our environment around us is, we can find that place. A lot of places can be peaceful, but you're never going to find a place called peace. I think peace is more of an inner dwelling. It's a place that we can only get to with Father God. Mickey: Blake, I agree with you, and there's an author that once said that no one can bring you peace but yourself. And, you know, even though that's true, I think that being yourself, as a Christian, you need to add one other layer to that, and that is, we need to acknowledge Jesus, and Jesus can bring us peace. And so, even though the author said, the only one that can bring it is ourselves, then a decision made by ourselves to include Jesus in our lives, I think that is the only true peace that was offered and that is through a faith in Jesus Christ. Blake: Amen. And we want to make sure to iterate that no matter what you're going through in your life, all the craziness, the financial stresses, the family drama you may be dealing with, Jesus is here for you and the only true peace you can find is through him. Mickey: Well I agree with you Blake and he is the only one that quiets the storm. Jesus is the one that without a doubt without him we have no purpose in this life so we have to rely on Jesus like you said for our peace in our lives. For everyone that's watching today, some of you know your mind is going ninety to nothing. When you wake up, it's on, when you go to bed it's on and you wake during the night and it's on. You say you can't seem to turn it off. Well that's what we're going to be talking about today and a way of succeeding in the heart of the storm. Blake: And that’s exactly what we built thelifelinetool.com. If you would, take out your phone, go to thelifelinetool.com, go in and leave us a message, it's completely anonymous. You don't have to leave your name. Let us know where you are today. Let us start praying for you, and let us walk you step by step to Jesus. Mickey: I don't want us to come across as, this is just an easy thing, open the scripture and the misconception is that when we open the scripture, then all problems go away. That is not at all the truth. What this is, when we open the scripture, God gives you the blueprint. He gives you the plan for you to begin the journey of learning how to have inner peace that only comes from him. Blake: Oh, that's exactly something I struggle with. I feel like in my life, it's almost like if I let chaos take over, it's like I'm being a bad Christian. You know, you're living your life day to day. You're running around, you're running late to a meeting, or then you're to the gym. Then your wife is calling, you need to get this for the house. There's so much noise and so much pressure on you that sometimes you can just feel like you're caught up and you're not doing what you need to do, taking time to find that peace, or where is that peace? It's sometimes a real challenge to find it. Mickey: You know, Blake, it does seem impossible, and whenever you're feeling that way, I think that what we're talking about is going to the scripture. So today, let's go to the scripture. Let's read the first one that came to mind. Philippians 4:7, and it says, “And the peace of God which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” You know, that's a mouthful. And the peace of God which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. So, I think what it's telling us is we have to have Jesus in our heart. And if we have Jesus in our heart and we believe it, like I said before, you have to believe it or don't. But if you believe it, then we have to understand that truly, the peace of God that only comes from Him transcends all our understanding and He will guard our hearts and our minds in Christ. That's, I think, the step one of finding peace. Blake: Without a doubt and I love that quote where it says, transcends all understanding. As people, I feel like we always justify or make sense of everything. You know, I don't feel this good because of this, but here's the plan, X, Y, and Z and sometimes the chaos of life is just too much for us to have an understanding of an exact course of peace. And you know, that's what I love about it. That verse is, really all it is, is once you finally, for lack of a better term, kind of give up control to God, then he comes in and puts his hand on your heart and says, you're mine. And you feel that peace that only He can bring into your life. Mickey: Praise God and no doubt we have to have Jesus in our heart. Just like the lifeline teaches us, we have to have a time in our life that we have to ask him in our heart. We're born again, and he is alive and well in the Holy Spirit. So the next scripture that comes to mind by using the lifeline is John 14:27, “And Jesus says, peace I leave with you, my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Blake: You know, to give that verse a little context, that's just before Jesus is arrested and taken to be crucified. This is after he has spent time praying in the garden that God would remove that cup from him. So it's not that Jesus never dealt with any kind of stress. It was, he knew what was coming. He knew his disciples, and he knew that he was about to be arrested and it was not going to be a pretty scene. But he's still telling them to have peace, to not worry. Mickey: I think that is so hard to get our minds around, that Jesus was telling me I'm not to worry, and in the same way he had peace, but then he knew what was coming, and so he actually sweated blood because he knew what was coming. He knew that was fixing to experience hell on our half. You know, I sometimes think about that in the garden, that, you know, the beatings and the lashings were horrible, but the part where his father God turned his back on him, so he could experience hell for us, he knew that was coming, but in his spiritual side he had peace. He knew where the end game was, and he was telling the disciples, he had peace. So he's given us the perfect example that this life is going to be easy. This is just not going to be easy, but we know where we're headed. We know he's our friend. We have the spirit of God living in us, so he is our friend. He is an entity that lives in us. So he's our friend. We can have peace, but then on the other side it's tough. It's just tough, you know? Blake: Absolutely. We have the human nature that causes us sin, we have this jealousy of other people. I think a lot of that is having no peace. You know, Cain killed Able. There's plenty of examples in the scripture of people letting their human nature take over, and they act the way they want to act, not the way they're called to act, and Jesus was the only perfect example of how to handle it and what to do. Mickey: You just said a word that struck a nerve in the word jealousy, you know? Nowadays that can grab your telephone, and you can see on Facebook, and Instagram, and all the other websites. You can see all these people, and some of them you know, some of your friends, and they're on a boat, or they're on a plane, or they're doing this, and the first thing you know, you are dissatisfied with your situation. And you don't want to be jealous of your friends, but you just can't help it, you know? And so, at this day and time, I pray that that's the reason God has empowered the lifeline like it has, not because of the power that I have, or you have, or the team that's this together. The because God has decided that even though this social media that we have, that is Satan's tool to rob our joy, rob our peace, rob us of everything that God offers, but now then, he is going to take the very thing that Satan is using to conquer all those things, and so that's what the lifeline is about, it's about us taking a tool that Satan is using to rob our peace, for him to expand it, and to go to all parts of this world, sharing the gospel, and teaching us about how to handle tough situations that come into our lives. Blake: You know, in lives we don’t really know what's going to rob peace, know, that be family drama, social media, business problems, you know, friendships that go south, you we don't know what that chaos is going to look like, and until we're it, and then it's really hard situation to get out of. You know, what are some examples from your life of robbing your peace? Mickey: You know, Blake, the first thing that comes to my mind was, probably the toughest time, no, no, no, the 100% toughest time in my life was around 2009, 2010, and that's when the crash happened, and my mother passed away, and I had three businesses at the time, and a ministry, Refuge at Cool Springs, I had Authorized Equipment CBM, and Mitchell Development the three businesses that were most hit in the nation, I've had all three of them, and so I was going through the toughest time in my life in a shopping center, that was the only thing I had cash flowing, Well, the crash had happened in ‘08, by 2010, I was just hanging on, and I had a shopping center that was holding me together, and we get this flood, and so it was a record-breaking flood, and a man that worked with me called me up and goes, Mick, we need to look at the shopping I had no idea that it was anywhere close to the flood plane and it was, it was supposed to be four foot out of it, and we drive down there, and we pull off down to the edge of the water, and we're sitting there looking at my shopping center, 3 feet under water. And so that would have the third making stool that would just break, that I cannot see a way out. And so the whole weight of the world, I just lost my mother. I had lost lots of money. And I don't know that I'm going to make it any longer and I’m having health issues to boot. I was feeling the weight of the world on me. I could not see any way out. And in the midst of that feeling, the man who had been working with me for 14 years was sitting beside me, and he was feeling my pain, and I was sitting there. I just, I remember that that was maybe, if not the worst, the worst being losing my mother, but that was coupled with it. And I was sitting there with way world, and all of a sudden, it was like God poured, and I said this a thousand times, it was like God poured a cold water right through my veins, and it was just like a piece that came over me, like I've never in my life experienced. And I haven't really experienced it since then. And I looked at my guy that worked with me, and I said, I can't explain it, but I've got a peace that this is going to be all right. And he goes, I don't see how, but I trust you. Mickey: Well, I want to call a time out, and I'll finish it. But here's what I like to tell people that are listening right now. That is one of the toughest things. I had serious brain issues. I'd lost my mother, I'd worked my tail off, and now I'm fixing to be broke. And I didn't really want to hear about the scripture. You know, I don't want to hear about nothing, except for how I was going to get out of this. And God gave me a peace that came over me. So that's what God offers me. I've already read the scripture many many times. And I had the Holy Spirit living in me. And He knew right then I needed Him to show up. And He did. And I did not understand it. I did not understand it. All I knew is there was a peace that came over me, that apart from me knowing the Bible, then when it did, I'm like, oh my God, why did I ever doubt you? I'm going to be okay. I'm going to have to work. And so, short story, I did. A friend of mine loaned me 14 of his men, and I go out there, and I clean up the shopping center, and the banks were supposed to work with me, and there's some things that happened that I was able to write off, a lot of debt, and then sell at the shopping center, that actually was one of the main things that put me in a place that the banks wouldn't pull the rug out me. The flood was actually one of the best things that happened to me during that time, but I couldn't have seen that, but God allowed me to have that peace. So I think that sometimes, whenever we have lived our life with God, and we have bathed ourselves in the scripture during the good times, then it has gotten you to a point that you hear the Holy Spirit. You hear, you sense what he's doing, so that at times when the battle gets so bad, that you feel like you're falling off a cliff. And then all of sudden, God says, let go of the rope, and you let go of the rope, and you fall six inches, sit around to the ground, the ground is right there because he's got you all the time. You know what I'm saying? And so whenever we talk about your peace, that is a story that I go back to, that now when things get bad, I look back and say, oh my gosh, he's got us. I think it's a whole lot more than just reading the scripture and singing kumbaya. It's a part of knowing that you know that the Holy Spirit lives in you, and that you've got to know your Bible, you've got to be in your Bible preparing for the battle. That if you live long enough, it's coming. And then whenever it comes, and you take your eyes off of what the main point is, the Spirit can just pull that water down your soul, and down your body to say, I gotcha. And then you can open your eyes and say, ah, I got, he's got me, you know. Anyway, that's kind of the look at it, in a real way, in just a real life way, you know. Blake: That reminds me of a quote. The quote says, the fear of suffering is worse than suffering itself. And sometimes we build up so much stress on ourselves, oh, if this goes wrong? Like, for you, you weren’t even thinking about the shopping center being bad, but just the stress that you were probably experiencing driving there, of ‘oh my God, what if it’s underwater?” And once you see it’s underwater, you know that there’s about to be something going on, but God gives you peace. Mickey: Yeah and that happens, but I mea it’s a lifelong thing for me, because there'll be days that things are so good in my life that I think there is nothing that will rob my peace, and all of sudden you get a phone call, and the next thing you know you're up all night long. And you're thinking, gosh, I just never thought I'd back here, and then you begin going back to, he's had it before, he's got me before, he's got me this time, and they'll quote that the Duck Commander used to tell his wife and his family, and I've adopted it, and it says, this will pass too, I love that quote, you know, so if just realized that God's got us, and whatever's storm we’re in, just hang in there, just get up, put one foot in front of another, work hard, and it will pass, you know. Blake: I think, spending time in the Word is almost like putting on your horse blinders. You put horse blinders on a horse blinders so all they can focus on is their next step, and they can’t get distracted by all the chaos going on around them. Spending time on the Word for me is kind of like that. I can focus and take each step rather than all of the distractions of family drama, social media, work stress, life stress, everything that's going on, you know. With that being said, want to take a second to say, know, guys, whatever stress you're going through right now, if you're having trouble with spouse, or dealing with that constant nagging pressure of jealousy, or whatever it could be, we want you to know that we're here to walk with you, at lifelineful.com, we've created this to give you the steps, you don't have to live in all that stress and chaos, you can put on your horse blinders and walk step by step as well. Mickey: There's a couple of analogies that, like the horse blinders, that they can only see forward, and then there's a story of a guy that's walking across this ravine, and the guy that told him to keep his eyes on him, and he wouldn't fall, and he used the analogy, this pastor, that was giving a story that we are to keep our eyes Christ, then we won’t fall. I love that analogy. There's another analogy there. If we look at the mirror, then we're going off the road, keeping our eyes looking through the front glass as we drive. So that’s like, as we live our lives, we should look out the front. So some of the things that rob my peace at times are looking in the rearview mirror. Looking at the things that I regret, the opportunities that I missed, the relationships that I messed up. And so whenever I focus on those things, it can rob my peace. And so whenever I think about getting into the Scripture, and that is the best thing, after accepting Christ. We're getting into the Scripture before, accepting Christ brings you to the point of accepting Christ. Then once you accept Christ, getting into the Scripture to move on with life is the best thing. But I remember grabbing the Bible, and it's so overwhelming. How do you start? Where do you start? And so that's what the Lifeline tool does, to get you moving toward the stake of salvation. And so it's so easy to get on there, and have a concordance, and it will send you a daily verse. And when you read that verse, it leads you to this one, and it leads you to that one. Before you know what, you've a devotion, which you can fall in love with the Bible so much that you can pick it up and read it Genesis to Revelation and bathe in it. Blake: But to that point, whenever you're on social media and you're looking, people don't realize that those are just highlights. Whenever you think about, take for instance, that's something very relatable to us. Whenever you see a picture of a group of guys with a big group of ducks and living it out, you think, man, that looks like so much fun. But you don't factor in the waking up, well before the sun rose, getting into the blind however you have to get to the blind, probably getting chewed out in the process, you know, somebody getting mad, throwing decoys, all the work they went in before the season, you're only seeing one highlight of that moment. Or if somebody climbs Mount Everest, you see their picture from the top of the mountain. You’re like, “oh my gosh, doesn't that look great. I should do that.” But you don't realize how long it took him to get there, how much training he had to do in the gym just to prepare his lungs to be able to go that high in altitude. Mickey: The key to this whole life is to learn contentment of where God has us and be open to giving back And to blessing others. Maybe taking our peace and sharing it with others. You know, whenever I think about that, I may have done this in a previous episode. I penned a statement, “Idont say a lot but what I say, I say a lot.” So the stories, i repeat them. So bles you, my kids hearts, they have to hear the same stories over and over again. The movie that anybody that’s watching his today, they need to go and watch this movie, if they hadnt sen it, but Schindler’s List. The best scene of all movies is at the end of movie, when there was a gentleman that was very wealthy, he owned all these factories, and whenever the Jews began getting massacred, he began hiring them and putting them i his factories. He hired way more people than he needed to save their lives, because if they working, they didn't get sent to the concentration camps, they didn't get murdered, and so he had all these Jewish people working for him, and he had given his whole fortune to save these people's lives, and so at the end of the war, they were coming in to find him, because he had been uncovered, so they won't take his life, so they came running to get him, and rushing him away, and he was looking back and the war is over. All these people were cheering for him, and he was looking at his ring on his hand, he goes, my gosh, why didn’t I sell that ring, I could have saved two lives, and then he started getting his car, he goes, my gosh, why didn't I sell that? That could have saved five lives. That's the way we should live lives, know, that's what the Lifeline Tool is about, it's about saving lives, know, God using the tool to save lives, then instead of thinking, oh my gosh, I wish had a plane, I I had a plane, which, I wish I had a plane, instead of being content, I'm saying, God, thank you for giving us this life to live the way it is, now then what you've given me, what can I do, what can I do, what can do to save lives, better lives, share my peace, share my experiences with others, so that maybe it can help them get through what they're living in today, you know I'm saying? Blake: Absolutely, I think, you know, that moment with, where, you know, he's himself up, I think that's such reality for some people, especially myself. I feel myself, all the time I'm the hardest on myself. I don't give myself a break. If something doesn't go the way i planned, the first thing is not to i’m going to read the bible because this wasn't the plan. The first thing is I point the finger at myself and blame myself, get down on me. And then after a little while, I'll start to come back around. A lot of people deal with that. Blaming themselves for everything and being their harshest critic.and is not necessarily a bad thing, especially in your work life and different things like that but whenever it robs you of your own peace is when you need to access that and find a way to give yourself a break. Some people hold themselves to this perfection standard and anything less is just terrible. As long as and were not called to be perfect. If you look in the scripture, we have this sinful nature but were called to be as Christ-like as were able. So we look in that scripture and he’s sweating blood. He's scared too but he still has peace because he knows that this is his role. This is what he's going to do. So if that's our standard of what we hope to be someday, we'll probably never reach it. But having that is your standard, you want that peace no matter what chaos you're in, I think it's such a good place to start with mentally. Mickey: But one of keys as we grow is acknowledging the hurt that we've experienced. The saying that says hurt people, hurt people, to whatever level. So there are days that I'm having a bad day because I've been hurt from a relationship, from a friend, from whatever, and it seems to that day I tend to maybe hurt others. And not literally, but just in a way that I'm just not pleasant. And whenever we can acknowledge what's going on inside of us, and acknowledge that we are not giving ourselves a break, then we have a tool that we can go to and put it into concordance, and let the app pop it up in the way that, hey, there's a scripture that tells us to keep our eyes on Christ and not on ourselves. You know? Blake: So many people, we talked about how people don't give themselves a break, people don't know how to handle all chaos going on in their lives, they deal with anxiety day in and day out. So what is the answer for somebody?Because obviously we have the Lifeline Tool. We think it's wonderful, but not everybody is going to be actively using it like we are. So what is something that everybody could use that are concrete steps right now they can take to lessen their stress? Mickey: You know Blake, some of the things that come to my mind for a temporary peace is a bowl of ice cream with chocolate syrup. You know, there's nobody that walks the planet that likes Blue Bell vanilla ice with chocolate syrup. And man, whenever I eat that, I'm at peace. But you know, the moment I finish that bowl, my anxiety starts again. Because I didn't put quite as much in it as I wanted. You know, there's another thing that I think about that, you know, love to bow hunt. And I can sit up in that stand, and I can bow hunt, and I just feel at peace, you know. But then whenever I climbed down from that stand, I didn't even see a deer, and I got eaten up with mosquitoes, my anxiety comes back, you know. And so as I look at all these things in life, you know, some people, they like to boat. And they can go out, and they can get in their boat, and can go, and they go in the lake. And the moment they pull it back into a slip, they’ve got to get out the towels, they’ve got to wipe it down, they’ve got to put the cover over it, and the anxiety comes back, you know. So this life is full of temporary things that give us peace. It's just all temporal. But the only true peace comes from a faith in Jesus Christ. And then once you determine that you're going to put your faith in Christ, and you give your life to Christ, and He comes in you, then you begin your journey down the line of Christ's likeness by using the Bible and this tool, the Lifeline tool. But there's lots of other tools out there. Selfishly, I don't think there's any tool like the Lifeline Tool. I really don't. But then our scripture begins learning how to achieve this inner peace that only comes through Christ, no matter what's going on. Just like we talked about Jesus, and we talked about Paul, we talked about all the disciples that were all martyred for their faith, but they all had a peace that came through Christ, you know, and so that's all this world has to offer is a temporary peace. What we're looking for is the eternal peace that only comes through Christ. Mickey: Let's pray. Heavenly Father, we love you. Lord, what I like to do whenever we come before you in prayer, Lord, I like to prepare myself to come to you. And I don't say come to your presence because you're present all the time. You're living in me. And so what I've to do is to prepare my mind. I've to clear my mind of all the distractions this world has to offer. The taping that just did, I want to just clear it out. And Lord, I want to say that we would never come to with a zip prayer to just zip up the meeting. Lord, would never come to you and position our words so that others can hear and be in awe. We come to you because we know that the power is from you. Lord, the only thing we can do on this earth worth speaking about or worth talking about or working toward is the fact that our lives belong to you and that you're ultimately doing the work. And so, Lord, the power that if anything happens to this lifeline tool, Lord, it's because of your power. And Lord, there's no one that has ever come to faith in Christ through our power. It is all about your power. And you're pursuing these people. And there's people watching. We pray right now that we're watching what you are pursuing. You have been pursuing them for some time. And Lord, now's the time that they want to put their faith in you. The people that are watching that they would repeat this prayer after me. Dear Jesus, I believe in you. I believe in virgin birth. I believe in your death on the cross. And most importantly, I believe in your resurrection. I am a sinner and I need a savior. I confess that I will live a life of repentance. But right now, I accept you as myLord and Savior. I ask you into my heart to be my Savior. Amen. Guys it’s as simple as that. That God just came into your heart. Dear God, we praise you today for the life that we get to live. And were content in what you've given us today. We thank you Lord, for all the blessings you've given us. Be with your families and cover them today. Be with us. Empower us to go do what you called us to do. The plan you have for our lives. We pray these things in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.
