When grief turns to anger at God

By Mickey Mitchell. The LifeLine Tool.

Nobody warns you that grief can turn into anger, and that a lot of it points straight up. You prayed. You believed. It happened anyway. Now you are standing in the kitchen at midnight with something in your chest you are afraid to say in church. Say it here. God can hold it.

Job said it out loud

Job lost ten children, his health, and everything he owned, and then he opened his mouth. He said he would speak in the anguish of his spirit and complain in the bitterness of his soul, in Job 7:11. He asked God why He would not leave him alone long enough to swallow. And when God finally answered out of the whirlwind, He never once scolded Job for being honest. He scolded the friends who gave tidy answers.

David wrote it down and sang it

Psalm 13 opens with how long, O Lord, will You forget me forever. Psalm 88 ends in darkness with no resolution at all. Psalm 22:1 asks why God has forsaken him, and Jesus quoted that line from the cross. Your angriest prayer already has a form in Scripture. It is called lament, and it is worship with the gloves off.

Anger is not the end of the rope

Here is what I have watched happen for years. People do not lose faith because they got angry. They lose it because they went quiet. Anger still talks to God. Silence walks away from Him. Keep talking. Nahum 1:7 says the Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble, and He knows those who take refuge in Him. He knows. Even when you are yelling inside the stronghold.
